Stevie Wonder Will Celebrate 50 Years of Songs in the Key of Life on a World Tour

Stevie Wonder is returning to the road with a reminder that some albums never stop speaking to the present.

The musician announced a world tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Songs in the Key of Life. The concerts will feature full performances of the landmark album, beginning October 13 in Birmingham, England, and concluding December 19 at the Intuit Dome near Los Angeles.

The European itinerary includes Paris, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Hannover, Cologne, Amsterdam, Dublin, London, Manchester and Glasgow. The United States portion opens November 19 at Madison Square Garden before traveling to Chicago, Washington, Detroit and Los Angeles.

Detroit receives two shows at the Fox Theatre on December 8 and 9. That stop carries special weight: Wonder was born in Michigan, signed with Motown as a child and performed at the Fox during Motown revues. Axios reports that these will be his first performances at the theater since 1995.

Released in September 1976, Songs in the Key of Life arrived as an ambitious double album with an additional EP. Wonder produced, wrote and arranged most of the material while playing many of the instruments himself. Its contributors included Herbie Hancock, George Benson and Minnie Riperton.

The record produced songs that remain deeply embedded in popular culture, including “Sir Duke,” “I Wish,” “As” and “Isn’t She Lovely.” It earned Wonder his third Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was later placed in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

Performing an album of this size in full is different from assembling a greatest-hits set. The quieter transitions, socially conscious material and extended arrangements become part of the story instead of giving way only to the most recognizable singles.

The tour also shows how catalog anniversaries have become major live-music events. Streaming makes older recordings permanently accessible, but a concert offers something an algorithm cannot: generations hearing the same music together in real time.

Presales began September 9 in some markets, with additional general sales scheduled for September 11. Availability and on-sale times vary by city, so buyers should use official venue or ticketing pages rather than resale listings when possible.

The album is turning 50, but this is not intended to feel like a museum presentation. Wonder is returning the music to the stage, where its messages about love, inequality, family and collective responsibility can meet another moment.
